The Murder Capital: “Blindness” - Between musical rawness and emotional depth

Hi and welcome to Lila's review!

Just in time for the start of the weekend, The Murder Capital are back with their new album “Blindness” - a work that already puts the listener in the mood for the sonic melancholy of the coming summer. The Irish band remains true to itself: raw, intense and relentlessly honest.

Although The Murder Capital were only founded in Dublin in 2018, they are no longer a blank slate. The band members, originally scattered all over Ireland, came together during their studies and developed their own interpretation of post-punk. Their music combines haunting melodies with deep emotions, creating a world of sound in which the most vulnerable sides of the listener can be hidden.

With “Blindness”, they address precisely these elusive feelings - those emotions that are there but are not expressed. It's about those blind spots in your own perception, about feelings that you often don't want to admit to yourself. Singer James McGovern describes:

"There’s what’s in front of us, in our immediate field of vision. There are the things we can touch, the love we can feel. Then there’s everything else. Blindness is the warped belief. The behind us. The secluded. Love at a distance. Faith in denial. Distorted patriotism. The fading face of moments in the rear view. Blindness brings it all into focus."

Musically, the band remains true to its style, but adds new facets to its sound. “Blindness” feels like a journey on which the listener arrives immediately, but only really understands what they have experienced at the end. Vulnerable and raw at the same time, the album unfolds a beauty that is characterized by its rough edges. This is particularly impressive in the song “Love Of Country”, which exemplifies the emotional depth and social relevance of the album. The Murder Capital have something to tell - and invite you to listen carefully.

A special element of this album is its creation process. Together with Grammy award-winner and producer John Congleton, the band initially dispensed with conventional demos or elaborate song sketches. Instead, they recorded their ideas directly on their smartphones. “He wanted us not to start demo-ing or layering any tracks, just phone-record everything. That way, by the time we got to the studio, no song was suffocated by what it needed to be, it was about what the song could become.“, explains McGovern. The result is a raw, unfiltered energy that is reflected in every single song.

Of course, The Murder Capital are also going on tour again with “Blindness”. The band will also be stopping off in Germany:

08.05.2025 – Backstage, München
10.05.2025 – Gretchen, Berlin
11.05.2025 – Gebäude 9, Köln

An album that needs to be heard - and a band that is even more haunting live. The Murder Capital make a statement with “Blindness” and prove once again that they are here to stay.
