Super Monster Party: When true metal and video game action meet
For all fans of epic sounds and pixel-filled worlds: I greet you in the name of Asgard!
Hi, it's Thor here.
Today we present a band that brings a breath of fresh air to the true metal scene: Super Monster Party from South Florida. The name alone should be familiar to die-hard fans, and anyone who doesn't know them yet will soon have to memorise this name.
The four-piece band consists of Rei Sega (singer), Andy Alvarez (guitarist), Emilio Martinez (bassist) and Fern Lemus (drums). Their trademark? A true metal sound that is classic, but with a twist: many of their songs are inspired by video game classics such as Doom Slayer and The Legend of Zelda. This original mix not only captivates younger listeners, but also inspires veterans of the metal scene.
With their new album ‘Rage Quit’, Super Monster Party take their concept to a new level. The album combines epic metal sounds with soundtrack-like interludes that catapult the listener into the middle of a video game world. Each song is accompanied by short ‘interludes’ that act like level transitions in a game and reinforce the illusion that you are at the centre of the action.
In keeping with this, the band has even developed its own game called ‘Permadeath’. In this game, players take on the role of a champion travelling through different worlds to save reality from ‘permadeath’. A creative idea that allows metal and gaming fans alike to immerse themselves in the unique world of Super Monster Party.
‘Rage Quit’ offers 25 tracks - a mammoth work that is unlikely to leave any metal or gaming fan cold. Every second song is accompanied by a short intro that acts as a ‘level transition’. Musically, the tracks have the typical true metal energy and have a playing time of 2 to 4 minutes, which makes the short intros even more effective.
The songs cover a wide range of topics from the world of video games. In addition to those mentioned above, there are homages to classics such as Resident Evil, Sonic and Street Fighter. Lyrically, the band picks up on the mood of these games and processes it into a sound that combines nostalgia and new energy.
The album surprises with powerful guitar solos, varied rhythms and a mix of clear vocals and aggressive growling. The drums add an additional tension that perfectly supports the already energetic songs. Some tracks even feature choirs, which makes the sound even more epic. The frontman's vocals move between melodic singing and growling, adding a dynamic that gives the songs depth and variety.
A particular highlight is the song ‘Another Castle’, which consists purely of vocals and shows that Super Monster Party don't just have to rely on classic metal - they can also score with vocal power.
Super Monster Party is much more than a classic true metal band. With their own video game and the creative combination of music and gaming elements, they create an experience that enriches the metal scene and captivates fans of video game culture. The mixture of clear vocals and growling, the powerful instrumental parts and the level transitions between the songs make this album a real experience.
Anyone who loves metal and gaming will find Super Monster Party and their album ‘Rage Quit’ hard to ignore - an album that blurs the boundaries between games and music and leaves you wanting more.
And with that, I bid you farewell,
