THE RASMUS are back with their new single “Break These Chains” (feat. Niko Vilhelm / Blind Channel). The accompanying music video, directed by Aleksei Kulikov, premieres at the same time on the band's official YouTube channel .
The song is taken from the upcoming album by the Finnish rock band, which has been certified six times platinum and eight times gold in the course of its career. WEIRDO will be released on September 12th via Better Noise Music and Playground Music - it is the band's eleventh studio album and their first on Better Noise Music. The album is available for pre-order now and will be released on CD, vinyl, cassette, as well as an exclusive box set and merch bundle.
“Break These Chains” convinces with THE RASMUS' typical signature: dark soundscapes meet powerful melodies. “The song is about a relationship that you know is not good for you - but you just can't get out of it,” explains singer Lauri Ylönen. In lines like “You made me believe / That true passion makes you bleed / So I stayed too long / To play your twisted games”, he deals with the emotional ups and downs of a toxic love. THE RASMUS enlisted the support of Niko Vilhelm - singer of the Finnish nu-metal band Blind Channel - for the powerful duet.
"When Lauri asked me if I wanted to be part of this song, I was immediately enthusiastic - even more so after hearing the track. The heavier sound suits them incredibly well. I'm really excited to see what comes next," says Niko.
Most of the songs on WEIRDO were written by Lauri Ylönen, Desmond Child (who has worked on the band's BLACK ROSES and RISE albums and collaborated with Bon Jovi, Joan Jett & The Blackhearts, Aerosmith, Alice Cooper and countless others) and Marti Fredriksen (Aerosmith, Ozzy Osbourne, Black Veil Brides) in Folegandros, Greece. There Lauri and Desmond met to work on material that Lauri had brought with him. THE RASMUS then recorded demos of all the tracks with full band in Finland in July 2023, with production being led by Frederiksen and Child.
They later finalized the songs and recorded the album with the entire band at Marti Fredriksen's Sienna Studios in Nashville. Some of the tracks were mixed by Fredriksen in Nashville, while others were mixed by Chris Baseford (Nickelback, Shinedown, Daughtry) in Vancouver, Canada and by Claudius Mittendorfer (Panic! At The Disco, We Are Scientists) in London and Joseph McQueen (Bad Wolves, As I Lay Dying, From Ashes To New) in Los Angeles. The additional production by McQueen gives tracks such as “Creatures of Chaos” and “Break These Chains” a new intensity.
After the singles „Rest in Pieces“ and „Creatures of Chaos“, each of which already has over 500,000 views on YouTube, “Break These Chains” is now the next harbinger of one of the most promising albums of their career.
“It's nice to see that our eleventh album conveys the same message as our first from 1996,” says Lauri. "It's about celebrating the outsiders, the mavericks, the creatives - people who don't let themselves be bent and proudly remain themselves. In our society, I often felt like I had to justify myself - for who I am and for what I do. I was called a freak, an oddball or a weirdo. That used to hurt me - now I see it as my greatest strength. People who inspire me are almost always different in some way. And that's exactly what makes them interesting. We Weirdos don't let ourselves get down - we know that our difference has the power to change the future. Are you a Weirdo? Then join us..."
THE RASMUS will present their unforgettable stage show to a worldwide audience on the “Weirdo Tour” in 2025. After a successful US tour with The Funeral Portrait, their headlining tour through the US is currently underway - kicking off on May 3rd in Atlanta. The European leg of the tour will follow in the fall with numerous dates in Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Finland, the UK and other countries. Tickets are already available in advance.
“We haven't been on tour this intensively for a long time - so we're all the more excited to finally be back on the road worldwide,” says Lauri. "We can hardly wait to see our fans again. It will feel like a big family reunion."
In the meantime, The Rasmus will play a charity concert in Ukraine on July 19 as the headliner of the Atlas Festival, as the only foreign act. The band would like to do their bit to support Ukraine. A total of over 60,000 visitors are expected and there is a comprehensive security system and evacuation plan for the audience and artists so that they can be evacuated within minutes if necessary. Last year, the festival raised over two million euros for charity, which will be used, for example, to support children's hospitals, buy ambulances or support medical staff in Ukraine.
WEIRDO is a bold, energetic statement from a band that is constantly reinventing itself - while remaining true to its roots.
