World's First Cinema take you to another world with their new album "Something Of Wonder" - a soundtrack for the soul
Hi and welcome to Lila's review!
Ready for an adventure? This is exactly the feeling the band World's First Cinema conveys with their long-awaited debut album "Something Of Wonder". The work will be released on Friday via Fearless Records and it is special in many ways.
Compassionate, melodic, a little eccentric: that's how the band's sound can be described. Let's listen to it together.
World's First Cinema sounds like a promise. And indeed, its launch in 2020 was a minor musical miracle for many fans. The two brains behind the project, John Sinclair and Fil Thorpe, met at a game night through a mutual friend. A few weeks later, the first single "Can't Feel Anything" was released, which became the anthem of the community with over 2.2 million Spotify streams. Further releases followed, forming a steadily growing fan base. Personally, it was the song "Young Beast" that brought them to our attention - a track that has made it onto our list of favorites to this day.
"Something Of Wonder" continues right there and opens doors into its own worlds of sound. The band creates musical spaces that hover somewhere between Alice in Wonderland and the Wizard of Oz - dark, magical, enchanted. On first listening to the first three songs, it was difficult to escape this atmosphere. Each track tells a piece of an overarching story, with every note, every twist and turn creating a new image.
The album is far more than just a musical experiment. It is a reflection of human emotions, between self-doubt, power, inner struggles and the search for the wonderful. At the same time, the band never loses its penchant for the playful and special.
The sound picks up on all of this - an emotional journey between highs and melancholy lows, carried by slow and groovy rhythms, catchy hooks and soulful passages. Familiar pop and rock elements meet orchestral expansiveness, a repertoire that appeals to all fans of the different phases of the project. John and Fil describe it like this:
"We’ve done heavily cinematic songs, really dark rocky songs, and orchestral piano ballads - we wanted our debut album to encompass all of these elements into a sonic journey that is glued together by the cinematic production tone we’ve always had."
And that is exactly what you can hear: "Something Of Wonder" is a cinematic sound journey through genres and emotional worlds, refined with its own signature style. A musical adventure and one that you should definitely be part of.
